Taiwan Food Experience Day 11 and 12

We were still in Kaohsiung and round from our hotel was this breakfast buffet:

I’m all like “it’s 10AM! Where the hell did they find time to do all the prep and stuff?” Really impressive. I’m not convinced it would have been the night before so it must have been a super early start for these guys/girls.

In the evening we went over to 海岸咖啡 which overlooked the shipping lanes just past the harbour. We went there for the sunset but it was completely cloudy which sucked.

So I drank beer and had some chips and crispy chicken:

The next day was our last in Kaohsiung so we spent it back at the harbour with it’s strange rotating bridge (Great Harbour Bridge) and we took time to sample some Taiwanese sausage with garlic at this street vendor nearby:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Taiwanese sausages with garlic is a thing you must try! Sweet and juicy and all round really nice. British sausages are just lame in comparison.

And that’s this quick update. The next day we headed back to Yangmei where some alcoholic golf was played during some truly horrendous rain and wind. More on that soon.

Taiwan Food Experience Day 9 and 10

We all headed down to Japanese all you can eat buffet in Kaohsiung in the south of the island and one of the first things we did when we got there was book in for lunch at famous Japanese place 翰品酒店高雄- 品日式料理.

It was super busy and you need to book before you go. And then you need to get there 30 mins early so you can pick up your booking tickets and then you need go to a different line to get into the restaurant. It’s a bit complicated but this is not an unusual protocol in Asia, apparently.

Taiwan Food Experience Days 5-8

Our epic journey continues on in the run up to xmas and we started day 5 with a visit to a large department store in Zhubei called 四川吳抄手 遠百竹北店 and it was Michelin recommended for a few dishes, the slow roasted pulled pork being one of them:

It was very rich and flavourful but I thought the pork could have used more cooking time as it was a bit chewy.

I’m In Taiwan Stuffing My Face With Incredible Food Days 3 and 4

Day 3
We’re still in Taichung and our guide suggested we try one of Taiwan’s top Teppanyaki places called 高林鐵板燒 which is near the National Museum of Natural Science:

We only stopped by for a short lunch and I had scallop, shredded rib eye, vegetables, rice and sweetcorn soup. All for about £15!

I’m In Taiwan Stuffing My Face With Incredible Food Part 39811

It has been some years since I was last in Taiwan and after an epic trip over from a freezing UK in which:

  • Initial flight was delayed for 6 hours
  • Connecting flight missed
  • KLM flight replacement flight class was downgraded
  • Baggage lost on arrival

Verily after 32 hours I was all like “well at least when we get to the grandparents baby Gabriel can eat deep fried ducks heart” which he totally did!

Things I’ve Learned Stuffing Myself In Taiwan

14993559_10154045512027966_8809291375523534925_nStar anise ribs, chicken with chili, potato starch prawns, intestine, stinky tofu and chili, chicken with glutenous rice flour balls, green beans, stir fried squid.

In Taiwan you will experience things you probably wouldn’t get a chance to in the West; over the past couple weeks I’ve had things like fish jaw, intestines, jellied pork blood, sea urchin and god knows whatever else. Continue reading “Things I’ve Learned Stuffing Myself In Taiwan”
